City Slickers

Today I helped out with the City Slickers program that is put on by our Multicultural centre here in Stony. Its a program to help connect kids to our agriculture--show them where their food comes from. I definitely learned a lot! I had to take a vacation day from work to do this but well worth it--i'd encourage anyone to give it a whirl. I spent my morning at Jesperson Dairy Farm, north of Spruce Grove with a bunch of Grade 4/5's and we got to learn about crops, milking, why you don't wear flip flops in a dairy barn and reasons not to EVER take kids to an auction with you($475 in play money for stickers!!) Then in the afternoon we were at the Heritage Pavilion learning about combines, threashing, sheep, chickens, canning...all very cool. Even got to bug the mayor. A very worthwhile day and cause; maybe if we all recognized what food should look like and where it comes from, we'd be more careful of what we ate...and more likely to buy from someone local. Maybe Sherris greenhouse should be part of the tour..
